Esthetician Services at Amethyst Wellness

Great skin care is vital to your anti-aging strategy.  A skilled esthetician can help guide you to achieve your goals. Here is an indepth interview with esthetician, Elizabeth Harrell describing the various offered services at Amethyst Wellness.

Q: Why did you become an esthetician?

A: My mother and uncle have had a huge impact on me.  My mom has been an esthetician for many years and taught me all kinds of tips and secrets of the trade.  My uncle is a dermatologist and I used to work with him during the summer.  He removed all kinds of skin cancer.  I really began to take skin care seriously.

Q: Everybody is talking about Microblading what is that?

A: Microblading is a semi-permanent superficial tattoo on the eyebrows.  It lasts for 2-3 years.  Most people need a touch up or what I call a “color boost” once a year.

It takes 2-3 hours to perform the procedure.  I use a numbing cream, so most people don’t feel any pain.  It usually takes 2 passes so I numb the client a second time before continuing the treatment to make sure they remain comfortable.

This procedure is popular because microbladed eyebrows really enhance the appearance by framing the eyes.

Q: What is Dermaplaning?

A: Dermaplaning is an exfoliating technique using a scalpel.  I basically shave off dead skin cells and fine hairs also known as “peach fuzz”.   Normally the skin exfoliates on its own every 28 days.  This slows down as people age, so the procedure helps enhance exfoliation.  This technique is great for anyone looking for exfoliation.  Another benefit to treatment is that is makes your make-up go on super smooth.

Q: When do you use Microneedling?

A: Microneedling is great for the treatment of fine lines and large pores.  It’s also a really popular treatment among dermatologists for acne scars.  The microneedling procedure causes microinjury to the skin which stimulates the body’s repair response, increasing collagen production.  The skin becomes smoother and more firm.  I recommend people get a treatment every 4 to 6 weeks for about 5 months and then twice a year after that.

I use numbing cream for this procedure as well.  It decreases the amount of pain felt by the client.  The forehead is definitely the most sensitive area so I leave the numbing cream on for longer and treat the forehead last.

People experience redness for about 24 to 48 hours after treatment.   After, they may apply hydrocortisone cream if their skin is irritated or itchy.

Q: Why might someone choose electrolysis for hair removal?

A: The choice of treatment for permanent hair removal depends on the type of hair being treated.  Electrolysis is a great option for hairs that are white, gray, blond or red, which do not respond to laser hair removal.  I use a sterile probe to enter each hair follicle.  The probe delivers energy which permanently destroys the hair.  I usually treat the client for 15 minutes at a time.  Most people need 5 to 6 treatments and then a touch up once a year.
