Your Genes Are Not Your Destiny: How DNA Testing Can Help You Take a More Proactive Approach to Health

What if you could learn that you have a genetic predisposition to a particular health condition before you ever develop symptoms? Advances in genetic testing are making that possibility increasingly accessible. DNA testing can identify certain genetic variants associated with increased susceptibility to conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders to certain cancers and other chronic diseases.

But there is an important distinction: having a genetic risk does not necessarily mean you will develop the disease. Your genes are part of the story—but they are not the entire story.

Genes vs. Gene Expression

We often hear the phrase “it’s in your genes.” But genetics is more complicated than that. Your DNA provides biological instructions, but whether and how certain genes are expressed can be influenced by a variety of factors.

This is where the concept of epigenetics becomes interesting. Epigenetics refers to changes that influence gene activity without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress and environmental exposures can influence biological pathways involved in gene regulation.

That doesn’t mean you can simply “turn off” every genetic risk through lifestyle. Some genetic variants have strong effects that lifestyle cannot completely overcome. But for many conditions, genetics and environment interact. And that means there may be opportunities to influence your health trajectory.

A Genetic Risk Isn’t a Diagnosis

This is one of the most important things to understand about genetic testing. A genetic variant associated with a disease generally means increased probability or susceptibility, not certainty. For example, two people can carry the same risk-associated variant and have very different health outcomes. Why? Because genetics interacts with many other factors, including:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Body composition
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Alcohol and tobacco exposure
  • Environmental factors
  • Age
  • Other genetic variants
  • Medical history
  • Medications
  • Social and behavioral factors

Think of your genetics as part of your starting blueprint, rather than a predetermined ending.

Knowledge Can Create an Opportunity

One of the potential benefits of genetic testing is that it can turn an abstract risk into something you can discuss with your healthcare provider. If testing identifies a meaningful genetic risk, it may prompt conversations about:

  • Earlier screening
  • More frequent monitoring
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Family history
  • Additional testing
  • Preventive strategies

The goal isn’t to become anxious about every genetic variation you carry. The goal is to identify information that could potentially help you make more informed decisions.

What Can You Control?

You can’t choose your DNA. But there are many aspects of health that you can influence.

Move Your Body

Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have for maintaining metabolic, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. And exercise isn’t just about burning calories. Resistance training can help preserve muscle and strength as we age, while aerobic activity supports cardiovascular fitness. The best exercise program is one you can consistently perform.

Eat for Long-Term Health

Your diet provides the raw materials your body needs to function. Rather than chasing the latest diet trend, focus on a pattern that provides adequate protein, nutrient-dense foods, fiber and the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Your individual needs may vary based on your genetics, health status and goals—which is one reason personalized nutrition can be so interesting.

Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is not a luxury. It is a fundamental biological process involved in metabolic health, immune function, cognitive performance, mood and recovery. If you’re consistently sacrificing sleep, you’re potentially sacrificing one of the simplest tools available for supporting long-term health.

Manage Chronic Stress

Stress is part of life. Chronic, unmanaged stress is another story. Finding effective ways to manage stress—whether through exercise, time outdoors, meditation, social connection, breathing practices or other strategies—can be an important component of a healthy lifestyle.

Maintain Muscle

As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Muscle contributes to strength, mobility and physical independence, while also playing an important role in metabolic health. This is one reason I encourage people to think about strength training as a longevity strategy, not simply an aesthetic pursuit.

The Goal Isn’t Perfect Genetics

This is where I think personalized medicine gets particularly exciting.

We don’t need to have “perfect” genes to pursue better health. Instead, we can ask:

  • What information do we have?
  • What risks might that information reveal?
  • What can we actually influence?
  • What should we monitor more closely?
  • What changes could potentially improve our odds of a favorable outcome?

That’s a much more empowering way to think about genetics.

But Be Careful With Genetic Testing

Not every genetic test is equally useful.

Direct-to-consumer tests can provide interesting information, but genetic results can be complicated to interpret. A result may not have the same clinical significance for everyone, and some findings may require confirmation through a clinically validated laboratory.

If a genetic test identifies a potentially significant disease-associated variant, it’s important to discuss the result with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Depending on the finding, genetic counseling may also be appropriate.

Genetic information should be used as one piece of the health puzzle—not as a diagnosis by itself.

The Future of Personalized Health

We’re moving toward a healthcare model in which we have access to increasingly large amounts of individual information—genetics, laboratory testing, wearable data, body composition, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.

The challenge isn’t simply collecting more data. It’s learning what to do with it.
